nugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah has unveiled 10 new Waste Compactor Trucks, 7 Automated Street Sweepers, and 200 modern Dumpsters, procured by his administration for the Enugu State Waste Management Authority, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
Performing the function at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu, the governor reiterated his administration's resolve to ensure a cleaner, safer, healthier and more prosperous state.
Our Government House Correspondent Fred Nnaji reports that Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia said with the introduction of the equipment, it clearly demonstrates his administration's commitment to building the Enugu State of the future as it is strengthening the backbone of the environment infrastructure and advancing a vision that places cleanliness, order and sustainability at the heart of his development programme.
He said a city cannot grow if it is overwhelmed by waste, noting that investors will not come, tourism cannot thrive, and the health of the people cannot be guaranteed, saying it is the reason environmental reforms have been a pillar of the governance strategy.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu said the feat marks a significant milestone in the efforts of Enugu State Government to improve Waste Management and general Environmental Cleanliness in Enugu State, noting that the vehicles will enhance the ministry's operational capacity to keep the streets clean and provide a healthier environment for all residents.
Also, the Managing Director, Enugu State Waste Management Authority, Richard Onaga said the intervention comes at a critical time when population growth and urban expansion demand innovative and robust solutions, saying by prioritizing mechanized waste collection and automated street sweeping, the governor has demonstrated visionary leadership and a clear understanding of sustainable urban development.
It is acknowledged that the new assets represent a major step forward, as the compactors will ensure faster and more efficient evacuation of waste across the urban areas, the automated Sweepers will make the streets cleaner to the standards of any modern city in the world, the 3,000 litres-dumpsters will help eliminate indiscriminate dumping and reduce the pressure of existing waste points.
