Lecturer Advocates Increased Funding for Nigerian Universities

A

senior lecturer at the Department of English and Literacy Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr. Oluchi Okeugo, has advocated the need for increased funding for Nigerian universities to enable them to compete globally in teaching and research.
Dr. Okeugo stated this on Sunrise FM programme Matters of the Moment while speaking on the Federal Government/ASUU agreement and proffering solutions to the crisis in Nigeria’s university ecosystem. She said the failure of the government to prioritise the needs of universities has accounted for the poor global ranking of higher institutions in the country.
According to her, the Federal Government’s lack of commitment to implementing various agreements entered into with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is the primary reason lecturers embark on strikes, which she noted has negatively affected the educational pursuits of Nigerian youths.

Dr. Okeugo also made a case for university autonomy and collaboration between universities and the private sector to boost infrastructure and resources.
