he Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai, has flagged off the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic registration of members in Enugu North Senatorial Zone, vowing that the party would surpass its two-million-member target across the state.
The flag-off ceremony, which took place at Ezimo Ward in Udenu Local Government Area, marked the commencement of the APC’s statewide digital membership drive aimed at strengthening its structure ahead of future elections.
Speaking at the event which was held at Ezimo Ward in Udenu Local Goverment Area, Ossai described the e-registration exercise as critical to building a credible, authentic and reliable party database, stressing that the exercise would help the party plan better and identify its genuine members.
“Our governor flagged off the e-registration of members of our party, and today I have come home to register and to mobilise our people across the length and breadth of Enugu North, and indeed across the length and breadth of Enugu State, to comply with our e-registration requirements.
“This exercise will enable us to plan. It will enable us to know who our members are, so that as we prepare for the next election, we will be guided to know who is with us and who is not with us,” he said.
The Deputy Governor urged residents to embrace the exercise to sustain the achievements of the state government and strengthen the party’s relationship with the APC at the federal level.“If we must sustain the good work our governor and our government are doing, and if we must sustain our relationship with our party at the federal level, then we must show that we have enough membership to support our party and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people. Two million members is the minimum, and we can even go higher,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of local government chairmen in Enugu North Senatorial Zone, the Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, Aka Eze Aka, described the e-registration as a major departure from the old manual system.“Our coming today is to show that there is a huge difference. We are now using computers because that is where the world is. Even the smart schools the governor built in all the wards in Enugu State are digitised. What lies ahead of us is bigger than what we have already experienced,” he said.
He thanked the Deputy Governor for the initiative and pledged the zone’s loyalty to the APC.
“We plead that you convey our gratitude to the governor for this new party we are in. Tell him that we are happy and comfortable in APC, and we are already receiving the dividends of joining the party at the centre,” Aka added.
Also speaking, Obinna Ekeh, who represented the caretaker chairman of APC in Enugu State, Ben Nwoye, said the e-registration was introduced to address inconsistencies between party primaries and general election turnouts.
“During primaries, we turn out hundreds of thousands to produce candidates, but during the main election you see very low numbers. This raised concerns for the party.“Before now, states produced names of people that neither existed nor could be found. This did not give the party enough information to plan. That is why the APC National Working Committee introduced e-registration,” he said.
Earlier, the APC e-registration coordinator for Enugu State, Flavour Ezeh, said the digital process would replace outdated bulk documentation and improve accessibility.
